What we say

SlideScreen 2.0 Beta

We’re making a preview release of SlideScreen 2.0 available today so that we can start getting feedback and so developers can get started on writing plugins! So without further delay here are the features present in the current beta release:

  • Plugin API
    • Anyone will be able to write a plugin, release it themselves on the market and have their items show up in the list on the home screen. The API includes support for: custom shortcut activities, real time “push” updates to SlideScreen, and “mark as read” callbacks to the plugin. It should also be pretty easy for existing apps to add support for SlideScreen through this API.
    • The first plug-in available is an open source Google Voice plugin, which means SlideScreen will also get Google Voice support. More features are needed, but in it’s current state it provides basic functionality and serves as a good example to other developers. Hopefully soon after will follow IMAP/Exchange email support, and Google Buzz.
    • Developers, go to the github project for all the API details and source code for the example plugins.
  • External home screen support
    • We’re replacing our launcher with a shortcut system that will toggle between any other launcher. The most common use will be to switch between SlideScreen and the standard home screen with all your widgets, shortcuts, and wallpapers. But you could also switch between SlideScreen and another custom home screen. Our most common complaint is the missing features from the existing home screen, so this lets us focus on what makes SlideScreen unique and gives you back all the regular homescreen features you love.
    • To use, just make SlideScreen your default home screen after install. When in SlideScreen just press Home again to switch between home screens. Note: In it’s current implementation SlideScreen will just launch the first other home screen it finds. If you have multiple home screens installed you may not see the one you want. This will eventually be a setting but for now just uninstall ones you’re not using.
  • You can now move information groups between the top and bottom sections, and put them in any order.
  • Google Reader upgrades include starring and marking posts shared (also works when offline, will sync later).
  • Facebook upgrades include real time comments display (reader will retrieve latest comments upon viewing a post). Also liking and commenting on posts right in the reader (all this also works offline, your likes and comments will be posted when you come back online).
  • Refresh current group menu option when in filter mode. Use this to request the latest info in the category you’re viewing.
  • Various visual upgrades, new icons, etc.
  • A whole bunch of bug fixes.
  • A whole bunch of new bugs. :)

We have plans for more features before 2.0 is officially released, but need help ironing out the issues with what we’ve done so far. Note: There are some significant changes to how the app works in this release, there will be bugs. Please only give it a try if you’re ready for potential problems.

What that said, you can download the APKs here: SlideScreen 2.0 and the Google Voice plugin. Bug reports and questions can be filed at our Get Satisfaction page.

As a final note, this version will eventually be a free upgrade for all existing SlideScreen users.

Hope everyone likes what we’ve been working on, let us know what you think!

Gentlemen – this is incredible news. You’re in Brooklyn, aren’t you? I already bought SlideScreen, so I’ll owe you a growler at Bierkraft, instead.

Oh man I am SO EXCITED for this update. Slidescreen is pretty much everything I want in a home screen, but I love the option of switching effortlessly to the classic home screen too. I also can’t wait to see what kinds of awesome skins and plugins can be made with this.

    :D

Wow, I thought this application was dead after buying it almost a year ago but I’m pleasantly surprised and happy that this once wonderful app has been brought back from the dead.
Way to go! … and thanks!

Ok so just tested it out on my Epic 4g running 2.2 FroYo, status bar visible checkbox being checked doesn’t actually make the status bar visible. When connected to 4G it still says 3G for connectivity type in the time/weather area.
Other than that it looks great!

    Nico on 12/04/10 at 10:37:38

Wow, I really thought that SlideScreen was dead because we haven’t heard anything for a long, long time.

I’m gonna try the beta right now :)

    Thank you!

I cant get to the app drawer :( when I press the menu button I only get to the menu… this is even if I use it as my homescreen and not opening it from any other launcher…

Agreed! Thought you guys deserted us!

Hopefully it will work with my x and *crosses fingers* Galaxy Tab?

    To excited.

Thanks for your work, now it’s pretty amazing!

One question: are you going to add integration with more Twitter clients, for example, TweetDeck?

    t-dub on 12/04/10 at 12:40:51

Like Nico, I had long ago assumed SlideScreen was dead. I’m really excited to see that there has been work! Perhaps more frequent postings here in the future would be helpful so that we don’t give up hope :)

    Installing now…

Fantastic. I just buy slidescreen 2 days ago, and this new version seem awesome. And the module API look every nice, good work !

Wow this is finally working out how I always wanted it, THANK YOU!

Mainly being able to switch back to the home screen (launcherpro) but also being able to use for this for normal updates. Probably the biggest plugin I can think of is one that would check my IMAP account, which I currently use K9 Mail for. And one more thing I which that we could set would be to be able to click on a twitter post and have it open up an application instead of the browser.

great to see this still supported, will happily buy full version since this is still being developed.

Google Voice integration was a must for me. Now I’ll give it another try with this preview release.

Wow, so far it’s working great! I love the ability to switch between LauncherPro and the stock launcher. So far no bugs.

    Dave on 12/05/10 at 08:40:32

    Excellent I must say!
Would love the ability to customize the center bar, and add k9 email support!

    Will monitor closely.
    Well done!

How can we disable the home screen switching functionality? I want SlideScreen as a homescreen replacement, not as a fancy UI for facebook & twitter. Any way to turn the old app drawer back on?

  19. Matt Hall on 12/05/10 at 18:43:01

We might have accidentally used a 2.x specific class, I’ll check. Could you post this on the support site too? Thanks.

  20. Matt Hall on 12/05/10 at 18:43:48

Not right now, we’re trying to see if people can get used to switching between home screens since it would provide so many benefits. More discussion of benefits and drawbacks happening on the support site, check it out.

    BGoods on 12/05/10 at 21:01:46

I see the ability to make SlideScreen a permanent home screen has been disabled.

Unfortunately, this is the exact reason why I bought SlideScreen. I would appreciate the option for users to decide, otherwise this app just becomes a facebook/email feed–something I’m sure many other apps do to.

Please don’t break this app for the all other users who appreciate this feature.

    BGoods on 12/05/10 at 21:18:20

My previous comment was in regards to the ‘home’ button defaulting to the default android launcher when in fact that feature still exists (I had to reboot my phone to get it back). I personally don’t use the app drawer so I do not miss that feature.

For all those who like the app drawer I recommend using QuickDesk+AppLauncher labels to replace the appdrawer. It works great with SlideScreen and is much easier to navigate all your apps anyway.

    boobasan on 12/06/10 at 06:21:02

Home screen switching functionality, while cool in principle, seems a bit inconvenient to me. I don’t want to see Sense home screen on my Evo. It makes my eyes hurt. I really liked the app drawer before. It worked great and just felt right. Please bring back the old menu button action that brought up the app drawer..

    jm on 12/06/10 at 07:59:28

I could get used to life without the app drawer if I was able to choose my home app. Currently the beta does not recognize my app (launcher pro), even if I delete the default ADW Launcher! Get this feature to us asap!

    Dave on 12/06/10 at 16:44:07

    Where is the support forum?

I am finding this product amazing and want to be able to contribute by letting you know any bugs/improvements I can find.

    Cheers
    Dave

    Rob on 12/07/10 at 03:03:26

I cant get to the app drawer either? Nor can I switch to ADW launcher by pressing home again, it just refreshes slidsecreen. I dont like the widgets method, I had slidesceen replace my launcher, what am I supposed to do to get to the app drawer? I love this program, its the most intuitive launcher on Android by far, you guys should have confidence that people will drop the whole widget thing! This is the future of touch screen guys, lets not go back in time here!

Should I go back to 1.7 or is there any way at all to access my app drawer with 2.0?

    Thanks

    Rob

What are you planning for the update frequency for the beta? It’s a pretty awesome product so far, but some “to do” features not being ready are killing me.

    Rob on 12/09/10 at 01:08:01

    Hey Guys!

Thank god you brought back the launcher…I hate HTC Sense and ADW launcher, whilst nice, doesnt compare at all to Slidescreen.

Keep up the great work, I cant wait for other developers to start supporting this. It is so far ahead of any other launcher out there.

    Cheers

    Rob

PS. Any news on when it will get GTalk and Music integration?

Man I just wet myself in excitement j/k!

I was worried that development for Slidescreen had come to an end, guess I was wrong :)

    Chris on 12/12/10 at 02:41:35

Awesome. I’m a former WinMo user and this is the one type of thing I missed from it. I can’t wait for final release of 2.0

    Dirhael on 12/12/10 at 14:40:24

While I like some of the changes, I hate the “external home screen support” with a passion. It wastes memory, time and it’s counter-intuitive. Suddenly launching apps takes at least one more “clicks”, not to mention the fact that we now have to deal with two different interfaces. This is no longer the app I fell in love with, and purchased :(

    BorisTheSpider on 12/12/10 at 20:46:33

I tried it on my Tattoo (1.6 Donut), but it didn’t work (there was a popup saying the app crashed over and over again) Almost freezed my phone actually. Can’t wait for the official release, this home is really amazing ! (Sorry if my English’s not great, I’m French).

This is great. Id love a music plugin!!

Does not appear to work on donut. Really wish it would.

I like the idea of SlideScreen, but on my Desire HD calender doesn’t load appointment. I use gmail activesync and 5 calenders. Also will be great if i have the opportunity to see all my call, sms and email when the slider(time and weather) is down even already read.

    QT on 12/16/10 at 15:23:35

This is an extremely informational and elegant launcher. I don’t need a bunch of icons and widgets that suck down my battery. So this is a great home replacement. However, at this stage, it crashes way too often. I notice that most crashes occur when there’s a pop-up of some kind. For instance, I have Handcent SMS with pop-ups enabled. When I receive a pop-up text with Handcent, SlideScreen would display the crash message. Or when I return from another app, it will also crash often. It’s only a nuissance because I can press Yes or No at the error log prompt and the crash message will go away.

    Environment:
    - Droid X, 2.3.340

    Keep up the good work!

    Martin on 12/16/10 at 17:52:30

I must say and agree with few others here,

the ability to have slidescreen as main screen is excatly what it made so special and quick to use. If it’s goin to swich now to another launcher just so people could have widgets I presume, then it’s useless I would say.

If I’d like to use jillions of widgets and nice wallpapers and stuff, I wouldn’t eve install slidescreen, I’d just use widgets to show me infro from e-mail, twitter etc …

Please guys, don’t destroy the brilliant concept of this app.

    Mart

It appears the beta could not work on 1.5, well im still using the older version of slidescreen and its the best homescreen, maybe if you guys could put music as one of it services^^
