What we say

Retro Defense: Android

Around two weeks ago we released our first game for Android: Retro Defense. It’s a tower defense game with what we think are some pretty kick ass graphics.

We’ve been working on this game for a while and are psyched to see that it’s got a solid 5 star rating and went to #1 in the catalog! If you’re on an Android device right now you can find it in the market by clicking here, everyone else can go here.

Check out the screenshots below and there’s video in the link above.

I really wish you could make this game less fun, ran my battery dead today (slow day at work) – I love the entire thing, best purchase to date on the Android Market ;)

    Looking forward to more!

Glad you like it Chuck, if you really want to kill your battery you should also check out Battle for Mars, then you’ll be using the phone non stop :)

I second what Chuck Brown said. Way too addicting.

I do have a slight problem, I’m unsure of what some of the towers do?? Anyway of seeing what each of them are capable of?

I would be quite cool, if you could sell this game, so the other 50% of Android OS users could buy it.

Others have their software in android market AND on other portals, so there should be no problem with this.

  5. Matt Hall on 03/23/09 at 03:32:07

@Goldfish: Check the help menu option, you can see a guide to all the towers in there.

@Bob: Are you not in the UK or US, is that why you can’t get it from the catalog?

Lovin the game. Thanks for unlimited levels, up to 74 on Ladder and counting. I play this game way too much. I tried Battle for Mars, but it just didnt reach me somehow, not like Retro D. Looking forward to more enemies, towers.

I believe that you can only buy in the US right now, but I could be wrong.

Thing is, I’m not a t-mobile customer. I never will be. Many people aren’t. Many people bought this phone, and use it on AT&T and such.

I even proxied my wireless through a VPS in the US, and I still couldn’t buy. It’s not entirely clear, but I now strongly suspect, that you must be a t-mobile customer, and be in the US, to buy this software.

This makes absolutely no sense, but IP geotracking is not 100% effective, and proxying didn’t work, so what other method could they be using?

How much of the market isn’t a t-mobile customer, Matt? Certainly a large percentage. Tons and tons of people bought this phone from ebay, or via other means, worldwide. Even more bought this phone domestically in the US, and are using it either without carrier services, or with an alternative provider.

After all, how can they differentiate between a US citizen on vacation (now you can’t access the market?!) and a non-US citizen? Again, not by your IP…

Anyhow, this market really, really sucks.. and I suggest you let the other 1/2 of people buy your product. After all, I want to.. but I can’t buy it, as you won’t let me. Further, I do see a torrent of it, and that torrent was right after your match on Google!

Long story short, if you don’t sell it to people, they’ll just pirate it… and Google is preventing you from completing that transaction.

On second thought, I’ve just downloaded that torrent, and I’m going to install it. I’ll be happy to pay you for it, if you tell me how to. If not, I’m sorry, but I’m going to enjoy it anyhow.

    Thanks

  8. Matt Hall on 03/24/09 at 03:00:10

Well put Bob, and it is certainly disappointing to see that torrent result so close to ours in the search results. Anyway, since the app is out there in the wild already and the Google copy protection seems to be a joke, we’ve turned it off on our apps. Can you let me know if you can see the game in the market now?

    Thanks.

    Bob on 03/24/09 at 03:25:40

I can’t see *any* paid apps. None…. so turning off the protection won’t help me, but it will help developers.

I emailed you on this about two weeks ago, but I know other developers that have released their apps via Handago.

I think there are other markets, too. The maker of Aevum Obscurum started selling here, after I mention the same to him.

Really, this makes sense in a way. Who only sells their product in one big box store?

    An interesting bit of text:

“As for downloading the apps, the uk will be getting paid apps in the next few weeks, for the moment it’s sim and router locked. so if you want to download apps from the market you need an american sim card (any network will do as you wont actually be using it) and a router, which you pretend is a us based one (don’t ask it’s a long story) so you can then access the market.”

I can provide no certainty to its accuracy, but that would make sense.

I like this game very much, but since the update, it won’t run and has to force close. I don’t want to lose a game I paid for, so reinstalling it is something I don’t want to try. How can I reinstall without losing the full game?

  12. Matt Hall on 03/27/09 at 21:04:54

    Hi Dan,

We were having some problems there with the market’s copy protection, but if you uninstall the game then reinstall it you should be working again. Feel free to email if that doesn’t work.

Hey guys. I love this game and would love to pay to get the full version, though residing in Australia, I don’t think we can buy it. Is its just an american thing? I know this was probably capped in bobs question but there is too much crap thrown around. Can you but outside of the U.S. or not?

  14. Matt Hall on 05/05/09 at 16:13:51

Hey Ben, from what I hear (just rumors at the moment) the Australia market is coming shortly so that should solve your problem.

Love the game, one of the most fun tower defense games in a while. One issue though, no way to close the application. Other apps when you use the Back button to exit to the Home screen will close. This one will not go back to Home screen from using Back button. Only option is to use Home button, which leaves app running in the background. Only way to kill it it to power cycle the phone.

Any chance of getting a UK release?, I would seriously buy the full version but seeing as you cant use my card to buy American things on the market (I’m using a solo card.)

    Demo is ACE btw :)

  17. Matt Hall on 06/01/09 at 15:17:53

Right now we’re just on the Android market, but hopefully they’ll accept more payment types soon if your card isn’t working.

  18. Matt Hall on 06/01/09 at 15:19:10

This is a common question we get actually. When you hit the home button the app is paused, so doesn’t consume any CPU. When the phone needs the memory it just kills our app. So the simplest thing to do is what we’re doing right now, and makes game state much easier and quicker to reload.

    MattWPBS on 06/25/09 at 15:53:43

I’m also in the UK, with a Solo card, and looking to buy the full version.

Can you lot give Google a nudge to find out what’s going on with this? I can use my Solo card for Paypal purchases and the like, just not on the Market. Pretty sure I’ve brought things in US$ via Google Checkout on my desktop as well.

Is there a chance you could get Google to set you up a duplicate account with a UK registration as a workaround or anything similar? It’s bloody annoying not being able to pay money I’ve got for apps I want.

  20. Matt Hall on 07/08/09 at 20:13:45

Hey Matt, we don’t have any control over what payment methods are accepted unfortunately. I have heard some rumors that T-Mobile is planning on supporting integrated billing, so maybe it will be as easy as adding it to your bill in the future. Sorry about that.

    Sara on 08/29/09 at 14:57:04

Is it possible for people in a non-paid-apps-country to purchase the full version form a kind of web shop? I really love the lite version and would love to spend a few bucks on the full version, but unfortunately I can’t. :-(

And I have no idea when paid apps will be possible in Belgium.

  22. Matt Hall on 08/31/09 at 03:48:59

We haven’t put it up for sale anywhere else than the catalog for now, no. It just doesn’t seem like there’s enough interest to justify setting up another place of purchase. It’s crazy they haven’t gotten UK paid apps support yet though, I thought they had already done that a while ago.

(sorry, but my english is not good)
    It’s game is great!
one advice: make save some state of game -> not require start from again

    James on 06/04/10 at 13:31:49

I’m sure you have reasons for it, but I mailed you the other day asking if I could pay you via PayPal and download it from your server.

It would obviously require some level of trust that I didn’t share it, but sharing it wouldn’t benefit me. Buying this game directly from you would (i’m also in a country that doesn’t have paid apps in the market place)

  25. Matt Hall on 06/04/10 at 16:02:43

Yeah, we don’t mail out APKs directly for a variety of reasons, but some of our stuff is available on slideme.org for people not in the paid market regions.

You got me all excited there, but no Retro Defense!! Ah well…

So, any news in availability outside of google’s market?
